Dear Mr Jatinder,

This might seem like an odd way to contact you for the request that I have but I honestly could not see a better way; I hope I don't take too much of your time. I'm actually a university drama student and am currently working on a presentation on the development of British Asian theatre and the discussion about the extent of British Asian theatre being post colonial or transnational. This may seem a bit random but I was hoping to be able to ask you a few rather vague questions about the early development of Tara Arts and with your permission quote them within my work.

I hope to hear from you soon, just in case the above format doesn't give you my email address here it is again:

Dear Jatinder,
Merkel did not say that attempts to build a multicultural society in Germany had failed. Neither did she herself say that multiculturalism is dead. Merkel did say that “the ‘multikulti’ approach had utterly failed” and by ‘multikulti approach’ she meant the notion that ‘guestworkers’, who would one day return home, and Germans, would live happily side by side. However, she did go on to emphasize that the onus of integration lies on immigrants - while avoiding the question whether German public policies have been conducive to their integration. She can therefore be said to have been courting anti-immigrant opinion, which has grown stronger in Germany in recent years. Nevertheless, Merkel’s statement did surely not exemplify that “Germany (has) learnt nothing from the Holocaust”. I think it does not befit the director of “the most culturally open-minded troupe in Britain” to think ‘Holocaust’ whenever ‘Germany’ is mentioned.

Portrait Of The 1985 Handsworth Riots, UK- Pogus Caesar - BBC1 TV . Inside Out.

Broadcast 25 Oct 2010. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ey7ijaXv6UQ

Birmingham film maker and photographer Pogus Caesar knows Handsworth well. He found himself in the centre of the 1985 riots and spent two days capturing a series of startling images. Caesar kept them hidden for 20 years. Why? And how does he see Handsworth now?.

The stark black and white photographs featured in the film provide a rare, valuable and historical record of the raw emotion, heartbreak and violence that unfolded during those dark and fateful days in September 1985.

Thank you for this post. You have spoken what I had been thinking. The media seems to have been strangely silent, other than a BBC segment on the shortage of Doctors in Bangor. The elephant in the room is racism, not particularly well veiled in the 'everyone's worried about immigration' truism that every party has trotted out. I am worried about immigration, about our attitudes to it and about the fortress mentality that will turn this country in on itself.
