An Arrangement of Shoes

Footnote Theatre in association with Tara Arts presents

Thurs 20 - Sat 22 July 7.30pm

Award-winning new writing by Abhishek Majumdar – an astonishing new theatre voice from India, whose play The Djinns of Eidgah was seen at the Royal Court in 2016.

Set in an Indian railway colony during the Gulf War, An Arrangement of Shoes is a solo show devised by Maya Foa and Radhika Aggarwal. Spirited narrator Rukhsar takes audiences on a captivating journey through her memories, painting a picture both of family history and the history of the time.

Performed by Radhika Aggarwal, this is a magnetic solo tour-de-force about globalisation and identity in the Age of Faith.

Presented in association with Tara Arts, before touring to the Edinburgh Fringe and Vancouver, Canada.

At midnight on 14/15 August 1947, India and Pakistan became independent from the British Empire. A relationship that formally began with Sir Thomas Roe’s embassy to the court of the Mughal Emperor Jahangir in 1615, ended over three centuries later with the independent nations of India and Pakistan.
The Indian sub-continent shaped Britain’s destiny, as much as Britain shaped modern India and Pakistan’s. Tara Theatre marks this extraordinarily intimate relationship through a series of 70 events over the course of the year - plays, music, dance and spoken word that illuminate the connections between the worlds of India, Pakistan and Britain.
“A moment comes which comes but rarely in history,
when we step out from the old to the new…”
Jawaharlal Nehru on 15 August 1947
