Following the success of Complicite Cooks: Syria Recipes from Home, cookery at Tara returns with Mira Manek and Saffron Soul: an evening of stories of home, migration and a family bound together by its culinary heritage.
Growing up in a large family including cousins who were like siblings, aunts, uncles and grandparents, dinner time was always a feast. Conversations revolved around food, what was being eaten and who was making what.
It was her grandmother’s passion for feeding the family with delicious Gujarati food that inspired Mira to hold supper-clubs and feasts in the UK, and later to publish her recipes in a beautiful cookery book.
The evening will chart the Manek family history from a small village in Gujarat where Mira’s grandmother, who they fondly call Bhabhi, grew up. Memories of skipping to school, leaving for Mombasa (Kenya), dreaming of India, feeding students in Kampala and migrating to London infuse Mira Manek’s recipes and book, blending history and storytelling with healthy living and wellness.
Mira Manek says “This event brings together the stories of my grandmother and family, the suitcase of culture and food and traditions that was neatly packed and brought from India to Uganda and then Uganda to London, and the transformations, influences and edits that have coloured our story through food along the way. And of course some delicious food for the audience to taste from the Saffron Soul demonstration with my glorious grandmother and I side by side.”
